Free Antivirus vs Paid Which One Actually Works?

Introduction

My name is Adeel. This happened in 2024.

My friend Usman's laptop stopped working properly. No folder would open. Pop-ups kept appearing on the screen saying, "Your computer is infected!"

I asked him, "Do you use an antivirus?"

He said,d "I use the free one, just for the name."

I checked his hard drive. Almost 50 percent of the files were corrupted. He lost his university assignments, family photos, and work documents. He paid 20,000 PKR to a data recovery shop. And 50 percent of his files still did not come back.

That day, I realized that choosing an antivirus is very important. Does free antivirus software work, or is it paid? I was confused.

So I decided to test for myself. I tried 5 free antivirus programs and 3 paid antivirus programs. I used them for 3 months. Today I am sharing the results.

What Does an Antivirus Do?

Antivirus software protects your computer in two ways:

  1. Real-time protection — When a virus tries to enter your computer, the antivirus blocks it immediately.

  2. Scanning — You can manually scan your entire hard drive. If any virus is already there, the scan will find it.

The basic job is the same for free and paid — both detect viruses. But the difference is in features and protection level.

2 Limitations of Free Antivirus That Paid Versions Don't Have

First limitation: Limited real-time protection. The free version has real-time protection, but it gives fewer resources. Some advanced viruses can easily bypass it.

Second limitation: No extra features like:

  • VPN (Virtual Private Network)

  • Password manager

  • Identity theft protection

  • Parental controls

  • Firewall customization

  • Full ransomware protection

From my testing, free antivirus software provides basic protection, which stops 80 to 90 percent of common viruses. But for the 10 percent of advanced viruses, the paid version is better.

5 Free Antiviruses I Tested (Results)

First free antivirus: Avast Free Antivirus.

What I liked: Lots of free features — WiFi scanner, password manager (basic), browser cleanup. Easy interface. Real-time protection is fast.

What I did not like: During installation, choose "custom install"; otherwise, additional software gets installed. Every 2-3 days, a pop-up appears saying "upgrade to pro." A bit annoying.

Overall rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

Recommendation: Good enough for common users.

Second free antivirus: AVG Free Antivirus.

This is from the same company as Avast. The features are almost the same. The interface is a bit different.

What I liked: Lightweight — does not use much RAM. Works well on older computers.

What I did not like: Ads for upgrades appear. A full scan takes more time.

Overall rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Recommendation: Good for old laptops or low-end PCs.

Third free antivirus: Kaspersky Free.

Kaspersky is an international brand from Russia.

What I liked: The detection rate is very good. In independent lab tests, Kaspersky Free scored at the top. Advanced heuristics can detect new viruses even before they are known.

What I did not like: Limited features in the free version. Only basic protection. The US government has banned Kaspersky on sensitive systems (some people have trust issues).

Overall rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

Recommendation: Good if downloaded from a trusted source.

Fourth free antivirus: Bitdefender Free.

This is from a company in Romania. Very lightweight.

What I liked: The installation file is only 8 MB — it works on any old computer. Runs quietly in the background — no popups. Simple interface.

What I did not like: Very basic. No extra features. Only on-demand scanning and basic real-time protection.

Overall rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Recommendation: Best for very old computers.

Fifth free antivirus: Microsoft Defender (built into Windows).

This comes free with Windows. Some people disable it — that is a mistake.

What I liked: Fully integrated with Windows. No extra installation needed. No ads. Very lightweight.

What I did not like: Third-party lab tests show average scores. Not enough for advanced protection.

Overall rating: 3 out of 5 stars.

Recommendation: Fine for basic protection. But if you have sensitive data, install something else.

3 Paid Antiviruses I Tested (Results)

First paid antivirus: Kaspersky Standard.

Price: 3,500 PKR per year for 1 device.

What I liked: Very high virus detection rate. Ranks in the top 3 in independent tests. Ransomware protection included. Secure VPN included (200 MB per day free). Password manager included.

What I did not like: Some people have trust issues because it is a Russian company.

Overall rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Recommendation: Get this if you want the best protection.

Second paid antivirus: Bitdefender Total Security.

Price: 4,500 PKR per year for 5 devices.

What I liked: Detection rate comparable to Kaspersky. Good multi-device support — 5 devices on one license. Advanced ransomware protection, webcam protection, VPN (200 MB per day free), parental controls — everything included.

What I did not like: Some features are very advanced — average users may get confused.

Overall rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Recommendation: Best for families — 5 devices covered.

Third paid antivirus: McAfee Total Protection.

Price: 4,000 PKR per year for 5 devices.

What I liked: US-based company. Good identity theft protection. File shredder, encrypted storage, VPN (unlimited but slow) included.

What I did not like: Uses more system resources. Older computers become slow.

Overall rating: 4 out of 5 stars.

Recommendation: Get this if you prefer a US-based company.

Free vs Paid — Real Numbers (My Experience)

The free antivirus cost is 0 PKR. The paid antivirus cost is 3,500 to 4,500 PKR per year.

The free antivirus detection rate is 90 to 95 percent. The paid antivirus detection rate is 98 to 99 percent.

Free antivirus real-time protection is basic. Paid antivirus uses advanced heuristics and AI.

Free antivirus ransomware protection is limited — some free versions do not have it at all. Paid antivirus software has dedicated ransomware protection.

Free antivirus software has no extra features (VPN, password manager, parental controls). Paid antivirus includes these.

Free antivirus has no customer support — only community forums. Paid antivirus has 24/7 chat and email support.

Free antivirus software shows ads asking you to upgrade. Paid antivirus has no ads.

Free antivirus is for 1 device. Paid antivirus usually covers 5 to 10 devices.

My Final Verdict — Which One Should You Choose

If your computer is only used for basic tasks (emails, YouTube, Microsoft Office) and you are careful (do not click suspicious links, do not visit unknown sites), a free antivirus is enough. Get Bitdefender Free or Kaspersky Free.

If your computer is used by a family member, multiple users, and kids also use it, and you also do banking, a paid antivirus is better. Get Bitdefender Total Security with 5-device support.

If you handle sensitive data — online banking, freelance payments, client files — paid antivirus is recommended. Get Kaspersky Standard.

If you have no budget, keep Microsoft Defender enabled. You do not need any other free antivirus.

My recommendation: First, keep Microsoft Defender enabled (it comes with Windows). If you face any problem, then try Free Antivirus. If you feel you need more protection, then buy a paid antivirus. 4,000 PKR per year is not too much — it is the price of one dinner out.

5 Questions People Ask Me

Question 1: Can I install two antivirus programs together?

Answer: No. Do not do this. If you install two antivirus programs together, your computer will hang, become slow, and may even miss some viruses. One antivirus is enough.

Question 2: Does free antivirus actually save me money?

Answer: Yes — for basic protection. But if a virus hits and you lose data, recovery can cost 10,000 to 20,000 PKR. So in the long term, paid antivirus software may be cheaper.

Question 3: Do I need an antivirus on my phone?

Answer: Recommended for Android — because there is a risk from third-party apps. Not necessary for iPhone — Apple's ecosystem is strict. For Android, download Bitdefender or Kaspersky for free.

Question 4: Do I need antivirus software on a Mac?

Answer: People used to say Macs do not get viruses. Now they do. Very rare, but they exist. If you have sensitive data, install an antivirus. Otherwise, the built-in protection (XProtect) is enough.

Question 5: Isa  VPN necessary for antivirus software?

Answer: Not necessary. A VPN is useful if you use public WiFi or want to watch geo-blocked content. Otherwise, the main job of an antivirus is to stop viruses. VPN is a bonus.

My Final Advice

Think of antivirus like insurance. You hope you never need it, but you want it there when you do.

If the budget is tight, keep Microsoft Defender enabled. It costs nothing. It will stop 95 percent of viruses.

If you want good free protection, get Kaspersky Free or Bitdefender Free. They will stop 98 percent of viruses.

If you want the best paid protection, get Bitdefender Total Security. You can cover 5 devices. 4,500 PKR per year.

I used free antivirus for 3 years — no issues. Then I fell for a phishing attack (not a virus, a fake website). After that, I bought a paid antivirus.

The choice is yours. But remember — spending 4,000 PKR on antivirus is cheaper than spending 20,000 PKR on data recovery.
