Introduction
My name is Adeel. This happened in 2025.
I had a Dell laptop. Intel i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 1TB hard drive. A normal laptop. I bought it second-hand in 2024. First 3-4 months, it worked fine. Then it started getting slow.
Boot time was 5 minutes. Opening a folder took 10-15 seconds. With just 2 tabs open in Google Chrome, the fan would start making noise. I was getting frustrated.
I thought,t "Should I buy a new laptop?" But I did not have a budget. I could not spend more than 80,000 PKR.
Then I decided — I will fix the problem myself. I did research, tried 5 different methods, and in 2 months, my laptop became faster than before.
Today, I am sharing those 5 methods that I personally tested.
Method 1: Disable Startup Programs
When you turn on your laptop, some programs start automatically. Like WhatsApp, Zoom, Google Drive, and Adobe updates. These run in the background and use RAM and CPU without you knowing.
My experience: I opened Task Manager and saw 12 programs in the startup list. I kept only 2 (antivirus and volume control). Disabled the rest.
Result: Boot time went from 5 minutes to 2.5 minutes.
How to do it on Windows 10 or 11:
Step 1: Right-click on the Taskbar and select Task Manager.
Step 2: Click on the Startup tab.
Step 3: Find programs showing High or Medium impact. Right-click on them.
Step 4: Select Disable.
Which programs can you disable? WhatsApp, Spotify, Adobe Reader, Zoom, Teams — anything that starts on its own. Except for your antivirus.
Warning: Do not disable antivirus, graphics driver, or audio driver. Everything else is safe.
Method 2: Clean Temporary Files
Windows creates temporary files every day. Browser cache, update leftovers, system logs — these take up hard drive space. If your hard drive is more than 80 percent full, your laptop becomes slow.
My experience: I ran the Disk Cleanup tool. Almost 24 GB of junk files were deleted. On a 256 GB hard drive, 24 GB means about 10 percent free space was recovered.
How to do it:
Step 1: Search for "Disk Cleanup" in the Start menu.
Step 2: Select the C: drive.
Step 3: Select all options — Temporary files, Recycle Bin, Downloads, and others.
Step 4: Also click "Clean up system files."
Step 5: Click OK and then Delete Files.
How often to do this: Once a month is enough.
Method 3: Upgrade from HDD to SSD
If you can only do one thing to speed up your laptop, do this. An SSD (Solid State Drive) is 10 times faster than an old hard drive (HDD).
My experience: My laptop had an HDD. Boot time was 5 minutes. I installed a 256 GB SSD for 6,500 PKR. Boot time went from 5 minutes to 30 seconds. Apps open instantly. Copying files is instant.
Why SSD is better:
HDD has mechanical moving parts. SSD is electronic with no moving parts.
HDD read/write speed is around 80 MB per second. SSD is 500 MB per second or more.
HDD boot time is 2 to 5 minutes. SSD boot time is 20 to 30 seconds.

How to install: You can do it yourself by watching YouTube tutorials. Or get it done at a computer shop for 500 to 1,000 PKR.
My recommendation: Do this first. It makes the biggest difference.
Method 4: Upgrade RAM (If Budget Allows)
RAM is temporary memory where your laptop keeps running programs. If you run 5 to 10 tabs or many programs at once and your laptop becomes slow, a RAM upgrade will help.
My experience: My laptop had 8 GB of RAM. I upgraded to 16 GB for 6,000 PKR. Now I can open 15 tabs in Google Chrome, and it still runs smoothly.
How much RAM do you need in 2026?
4 GB RAM is for basic tasks only — document editing and 1-2 tabs. The laptop will feel slow.
8 GB RAM is for normal use — 5-8 tabs, YouTube, Office. Works fine.
16 GB RAM is for heavy use — 15-20 tabs, photo editing, coding. Smooth experience.
32 GB RAM is for professional work — video editing, virtual machines, gaming. Too much for normal users.
How to check if an upgrade is possible: Open Task Manager. Click on the Performance tab, then Memory. Look at "Slots used." If it says "1 of 2" — one slot is empty- an upgrade is possible. If it says "2 of 2" — both slots are full- you will need to remove existing RAM to upgrade.
Method 5: Disable Background Apps and Visual Effects
Windows use animations, transparency effects, and shadows. These use CPU and GPU. On older laptops, turning these off improves performance.
My experience: I turned off all unnecessary visual effects. The laptop felt a bit faster — not a huge difference, but noticeable.
How to turn off visual effects:
Step 1: Search for "Adjust the appearance and performance" in the Start menu.
Step 2: Select "Adjust for best performance."
Step 3: Click Apply and then OK.
This will make Windows look basic (old school style), but speed will improve slightly.
How to turn off background apps on Windows 11:
Step 1: Open Settings.
Step 2: Go to Apps.
Step 3: Click on Startup.
Step 4: Turn OFF apps you do not need.
Bonus Method: Reinstall Windows
If you tried the 5 methods above and your laptop is still slow, do a fresh Windows install. This removes all junk, viruses, and corrupt files.
My experience: I reinstalled Windows (clean installation). The laptop felt new. But before doing this, take a backup of your data. Otherwise, everything will be deleted.
Time required: Installation takes 1 to 2 hours. Installing drivers and apps takes another 1 to 2 hours.
Which Method Makes the Biggest Difference (My Ranking)
Method 3 (SSD upgrade) makes the biggest difference. Cost is 3,500 to 12,000 PKR. Time required is 1 hour. Speed improvement is dramatic. The difficulty is medium.
Method 4 (RAM upgrade) also makes a big difference if your RAM is less than 8 GB. The cost is 4,000 to 12,000 PKR. Time required is 15 minutes. Speed improvement is great. Difficulty is easy.
Method 1 (Disable startup programs) is free. The time required is 5 minutes. Speed improvement is moderate. Difficulty is very easy.
Bonus method (Reinstall Windows) is free. The time required is 2 to 4 hours. Speed improvement is great. The difficulty is medium.
Method 2 (Clean temporary files) is free. The time required is 10 minutes. Speed improvement is slight. Difficulty is very easy.
Method 5 (Disable visual effects) is free. The time required is 2 minutes. Speed improvement is slight. Difficulty is very easy.
My recommendation, if you have a budget: Do the SSD upgrade first. It makes the biggest difference.
5 Questions People Ask Me
Question 1: My laptop is 10 years old. Will these methods work?
Answer: On a 10-year-old laptop, disabling visual effects and startup programs will help a little. If you also do an SSD upgrade, it will become usable. But realistically, buying a new laptop is better.
Question 2: Does an SSD affect battery life?
Answer: An SSD uses less power than an HDD. So battery life improves slightly — typically 30 to 60 minutes extra.
Question 3: Can I install an SSD myself?
Answer: If you have never opened a laptop before, watch a YouTube video first. It is very easy — just remove screws, take out the HDD, put in the SSD, and install Windows. If not comfortable, get it done at a shop.
Question 4: Will my files come back after reinstalling Windows?
Answer: No. All data is deleted. So take a backup first. Use an external hard drive, Google Drive, or OneDrive.
Question 5: Do these methods work on a MacBook?
Answer: Partially. Disabling startup programs and cleaning temporary files works. But a RAM upgrade is usually impossible on MacBooks because the RAM is soldered.
My Final Advice
A slow laptop is a common problem — you are not alone. I faced it, and I solved it.
Priority order:
First: If you have a budget, do an SSD upgrade. It is life-changing.
Second: Disable startup programs. It is free and takes 5 minutes.
Third: Clean temporary files. It is free and takes 10 minutes.
Fourth: Upgrade RAM if you have less than 8 GB.
Fifth: Disable visual effects. It helps a little.
Last: Reinstall Windows. Only do this when nothing else works.
I took my laptop from a 5-minute boot time to 30 seconds — just with an SSD upgrade. If I can do it, you can do it too.
